Battery Fire Testing

Testing Methods

We conduct Thermal Runaway Fire testing of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at both the Module level and Unit level using our fully conditioned indoor ISO17025 Accredited Calorimeter System.

UL9540A

 UL 9540A evaluates thermal runaway fire propagation in BESS. It initiates thermal runaway (caused by shorts, overcharge, damage, or temperature extremes) and measures fire, explosion, gas composition, flammability, heat release, and spread risks—enabling safer designs. We offer UL 9540A and UL9540B testing in an eco-friendly indoor burn facility with pollution abatement.  

UL 9540A: Section 8 Module-Level:

 Tests propagation within modules; assesses flaming, smoke, heat release, and gases.  

UL9540A: Section 9 Unit-Level:

 Evaluates full battery units to assess heat release, thermal transfer to surrounding units and walls, heat flux in the vicinity of the unit, quantity and volume of combustible gasses being released during thermal runaway and determination if the fire will spread between batteries or to the structure. 

UL1973: Section 38/41 Heptane Pan Test

Fire testing of the client’s battery system to determine if the battery system will explode when exposed to a hydrocarbon pool/brush fire as evidenced by projectiles flying outside of the circular inner perimeter.

Custom R&D Testing

We have conducted a variety of R&D Tests from module to module propagation small scale tests to fire suppression research and development.   If you have a custom test request, or a question you need answered quickly with supporting test data, we are great at helping design and carry out custom testing protocols to help you get the data you need quickly.  This will help you determine if product design changes are needed before finalizing production and proceeding to the certification phase of your project.

 We are the only lab with real-time remote test viewing via patented (U.S. Patent #12,050,115) system: Live video + synchronized sensor data enables you (and any members of your team to view your test remotely to both observe the test video while any of the real-time data can be displayed on-screen in dynamic charts and graphs.
