UL 9540A evaluates thermal runaway fire propagation in BESS. It initiates thermal runaway (caused by shorts, overcharge, damage, or temperature extremes) and measures fire, explosion, gas composition, flammability, heat release, and spread risks—enabling safer designs. We offer UL 9540A testing in an eco-friendly indoor burn facility with pollution abatement. 

Testing Levels:

 Module-Level: Tests propagation within modules; assesses flaming, smoke, heat release, and gases.  

Unit-Level: Evaluates full battery units to assess heat release, thermal transfer to surrounding units and walls, heat flux in the vicinity of the unit, quantity and volume of combustible gasses being released during thermal runaway and determination if the fire will spread between batteries or to the structure.

enables you (and any members of your team to view your test remotely to both observe the test video while any of the real-time data can be displayed on-screen in dynamic charts and graphs.

A calorimeter hood pulls in the products of combustion (smoke) from a material or product on fire and through various sensors determines the heat released from the material when on fire. 

Additionally for UL9540A Battery Fire testing we have the ability to measure the gas composition during a thermal runaway event.

Our Calorimetry Hood was designed to allow a variety of products to be tested in our fully conditioned laboratory.  

The computer designed exhaust train exceeds the requirements of ASTM E1537, ASTM E1590, California Technical Bulletin 121, California Technical Bulletin 129, California Technical Bulletin 133, CPSC 16 CFR Part 1633, CSFM 12-7A-1, CSFM 12-7A-2, CSFM 12-7A-3, CSFM 12-7A-4 Part A as well as NFPA 286, UL 1715, and UL9540A.  

The Calorimeter Hood System also Utilizes a dedicated state of the art data acquisition hardware with revolutionary purpose built software which will change the expectation for how these tests are reported.

The Steiner tunnel test method's use an enclosed chamber to evaluate a 24' long x 2' wide sample and helps assess the surface burning characteristics of the material to determine in a laboratory setting if the material meets certain flammability safety requirements in the building code.

Our 100% computer modeled and controlled Steiner tunnel system exceeds the requirements of ASTM E84, UL723, NFPA 255, ASTM E2768, CAN/ULC S102, CAN/ULC S102.2, CAN/ULC S102.3, and CSFM 12-7A-5 using state of the art sensors, data acquisition hardware and software designed to revolutionize the way test are conducted and reported.  Other test methods utilizing the Steiner Tunnel Test chamber are in the works and coming soon.   

This equipment is run through a 99% efficiency Open Flame Thermal Oxidizer to render any smoke or odors inert prior to leaving our building.

We have designed our process to seamlessly transfer from your first contact with us to the report in your inbox as efficiently as possible with a minimal impact to the surrounding environment.   

Our testing equipment was designed to accommodate fire testing while still maintaining a good relationship with our neighbors and surrounding environment.   All of our fire testing equipment is routed through either a 99% efficiency Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer or our 99% efficiency Open Flame Thermal Oxidizer to clean the exhaust from the fire lab before being released from our building, eliminating particulates and offensive odors associated with fire testing.   

We utilize an Electric Vehicle and have an on site Electric Vehicle Charging Station with the J1776 charging protocol, if you drive an EV and want to check us out, don't hesitate to stop by and charge while on a tour. 

Furthermore, we re-use and filter the water used in our testing equipment as to further lower our negative impact on natural resources while testing your products.
